This article reminds me of an essay in one of my film class' textbooks. It was about how it was a "bourgeois ideology" to try to hide the reality of making a film (making it appear seamless). As part of our senior class project, one of my classmates, Bill Bridges, made a very funny short film where he walked around the streets of Richmond, VA, asking people what "bourgeois ideology" was.

Through a grant from the Packard Foundation, the Library of Congress has acquired and converted an old Federal Reserve facility in Culpeper, VA to become the new home of their audiovisual archiving efforts. Now this is doing it right!

Also, the sidebar of the article has information about a program that takes digital images from broken vinyl or wax records and recreates the sounds. Here's the URL: http://irene.lbl.gov/.

On Thursday, March 30, Turner Classic Movies is featuring 5 films with Bernard Herrmann scores. They're showing:

  • Fahrenheit 451 at 8:00 p.m.

  • Jason and the Argonauts at 10:00 p.m.

  • The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad at midnight (Friday, March 31 technically)

  • Cape Fear (1962) at 1:30 a.m.

  • The Naked and the Dead at 3:30 a.m.

I'm surprised they aren't showing any of the films he scored for Hitchcock. Those were some of his best, but these are good too!
